Unpuzzling Terrorism: MA Students Ask Questions to Prof. Boaz Ganor

27/07/2016 | by ICT Staff

Prof. Ganor addressed the necessity for an international definition of terrorism and offered his own definition: the “deliberate use of violence, aimed against civilians of civilian targets, in order to achieve political ends.”  He answered questions over concerns about political correctness in discussing jihadist and Salafist Islam, as well as presented measures that moderate Muslims can take within their own communities to discourage radicalization.  Prof. Ganor emphasized the necessity of global and local networks to defeat terrorist networks, but noted that terrorism evolves and that societal changes are necessary to defeat homegrown terrorism.  Prof. Ganor explained the role of generational differences in radicalization and how terror organizations can exploit liberal democratic values.  He concluded by describing what to expect at the ICT’s annual conference.
