This month’s report covers terrorist incidents throughout the world, with special emphasis on events in Europe. The report highlights the 22 May brutal killing of British Soldier Lee Rigby in broad daylight by Michael Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo, two Muslim converts. The attack was condemned by world leaders and religious leaders alike. The attackers told stunned passers-by that they were motivated by a desire to avenge the killing of Muslims by the British military. Several days later, a French soldier who was patrolling a commercial district west of Paris was stabbed in the neck by a man of North African origin. The attacker fled the scene. Authorities were investigating whether this was a copycat attack. In May 2013, terrorist incidents were also recorded in Afghanistan, Bahrain, France, India, Iraq, Niger, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Somalia, Tanzania, Thailand and Turkey.

This month’s report also covers counter-terrorist incidents throughout the world, with particular emphasis on events in North Africa. The report highlights the dismantling of a Hezbollah cell in Kano, Nigeria, after police discovered a large cache of weapons in a Hezbollah compound. Authorities claimed that the weapons were intended to be used to attack Israeli and Western targets in Nigeria. They also reported arresting a militant identified as Mustafa Fawaz on 16 May, whose confession led to the arrests of other Hezbollah cell members. A second suspect, Abdullah Tahini, was arrested several days later as he tried to board a flight from Kano to Beirut. On 26 May, Lebanese national Talal Roda was arrested in Kano in connection with the same cell. According to police, a fourth suspect identified as Fauzi Fawad is still at large. During questioning, the suspects all admitted to being members of Hezbollah. In May 2013, counter-terrorist incidents were also recorded in Egypt, France, Indonesia, Israel and the West Bank, the UK, Kenya, Lebanon, Mauritania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, United States and Yemen.
