Chief Heaton has been in law enforcement for the past 34 years. He has worked in a variety of areas to include patrol, investigations, internal affairs, public information, accreditation, state certification and administration. Chief Heaton has spent the latter part of his career in the investigative area moving through the ranks from Detective to Major until receiving an opportunity in March 2006 to serve as the Chief of Police in Fayetteville, Georgia. Chief Heaton retired from Fayetteville in August 2013. In April 2014, Chief Heaton was selected as the Chief of Police in Griffin, Georgia where he worked until November 2015. In December 2015, Chief Heaton accepted a position as the Executive Associate Director with the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Program (GILEE) which is part of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Chief Heaton has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Masters of Public Administration. Chief Heaton is a graduate of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police Command College, Tennessee Law Enforcement Executive Development Course and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. Chief Heaton is an Assessor and Team Leader for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). He serves on several boards and committees to include the State Certification for Law Enforcement Agencies Committee for the State of Georgia and the Legislative Committee for the Georgia Chiefs of Police. He also served as fourth Vice President for the Georgia Chiefs of Police Association until his retirement in August 2013.
